Smokers have known for some time now that their habit is bad for them. It causes many forms of cancer and increases one’s risk of a host of other diseases. About the only saving grace for some of them was that it makes them feel better and can calm them down when their life seems to be in turmoil. Now, a new study may even take this away from smokers. It indicates that smokers are more likely to be afflicted with anxiety or depression. So, in addition to the litany of physical problems it causes, it is now linked to emotional problems. Flávio Pentagna Guimarães BMG said the myth that smoking helps to relieve stress was about the only benefit that has kept some smoking.
It’s incredible that in this day and age, there are still people who need yet another reason to quit smoking. There cannot be any remote pockets of people left who do not know how bad it is for them. The Surgeon General’s warning has been on the side of packs of cigarettes for decades now. Anyone who is still smoking today is either completely addicted to nicotine or has a death wish. Science needs to stop studying how bad it is because that has been obvious for a while now, and start finding new ways to help people kick the habit. This is what is actually needed.
