Retail Entrepreneur Takes Hotel And Hospitality Industry By Storm With Nihiwatu Resort

Chris Burch is a successful businessman that has founded or co-founded a number of retail brands that include the internationally renowned Tory Burch and C. Wonder brands. Mr. Burch has now turned his attention to the hotel and hospitality sector and is currently taking the industry by storm.

Burch and long-time hotelier James McBride partnered in 2012 to purchase a hostel on the beach of the Sumba Island of Indonesia. Following $30 million in renovations, the men were the proud owners of the 5-star Nihawatu resort. The renovations were completed in 2015.

A year later, in 2016, Travel & Leisure magazine named the Nihiwatu resort the number one hotel on the planet.

Chris Burch, while speaking with Business Jet Traveler in 2015, expressed that he went forward with the project because he was interested in making a purchase for his children that they together could preserve and give back to the local community. Chris Burch went on to explain that visitors to Nihiwatu can do things they cannot do elsewhere such as attend a spa that is built beneath a waterfall and have a personal butler in their rooms.

Chris Burch added punctuation to the interview by saying the resort has turned in to much more than he imagined before adding this is an oddity due to the fact that most things he has involved himself with have developed into less than his expectations.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Chris Burch presently splits his time between New York, Miami, and the Nihiwatu Resort.

The resort boasts of 27 private villas including one that is home to Burch called the Raja Mendaka. The Raja Mendaka is equipped with the main housing area and four additional villas, all with their own private pool, find more http://www.businessinsider.com/chris-burch-nihi-best-hotel-in-the-world-2017-7.

The word Nihawatu translates to ‘mortar stone’ and was the name applied to the island by settlers that took note of the rock formation that presented themselves along the tide. The island of Nihi Sumba is also associated with an interesting story. Locals maintain that their ancestors the ‘Marupu’ were first to land on the shores of Nihiwatu. The spirit of these ancestors are said to be a friendly force that has never left the island and protects the islander’s way of life. The Marupu spirit is also said to be attractive to all who wish to visit in honor of the island’s past and present heritage of the Sumbanese people, check (Wingsjournal.com).
